A Continuing Studies class in Chinatown! Imogene Lim led the Chinatown Walking Tour, a VIU Centre for Continuing Studies (CCS) course. It was as much a historical tour, as it was a dining one! The highlight was having dim sum at Floata Restaurant; May 20, Cheers to bubble tea! Screening Three VIU students participated in the UofT archaeological field school held on Sechelt Traditional Territory under Dr Gary Coupland's supervision. They are on a 5-week internship in archaeology and palaeoanthropology (June-July). Happy Canada Day! Working inside Scladina Cave, Belgium The two Sarahs are excavating in their units. Is this Raga, the Scladina Cave child? Actually this is Mel dressed as Raga, a Neanderthal child dated at 100,000 years ago. Interns at Nanaimo Museum This year Anthropology has six students interning at Nanaimo Museum, assisting with exhibits and collections Friday International Development Week Event Dr Lim standing between two displays representing activities by members of the Anthropology Department. On March 1, the Indian festival known as Holi, or the Festival of Colours, was celebrated on campus. Imogene (ANTH) and Lynn (PSYC) were willing faculty participants. Student working group This group of students from ANTH 316, Anthropology of Homelessness, are assisting in preparing the Nanaimo Homelessness Report Card. How much? Look out! Grant Keddie from the Royal BC Museum demonstrates the use of an atlatl to students of ANTH 121 (Aboriginal Peoples and Cultures in Canada). Community Oral History Workshop This workshop was organized by the Department of Anthropology and the Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives. Becka (front, right) was our intern at the Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives. And introducing... Bel, President of the Anthropology Student Club (ASC), introduces the events--the annual Anthropology Forum and our award ceremony. Let there be music! Musical entertainment for our annual Anthropology Forum, held March 18, 2010. A celebration has to have food! And there was lots to choose from--as always! Chowtime! Lucky us, we have our food! Those who have and those who are still getting food... Some of our students (1) Julia and Lisa, former and present anthropology students. Some of our students (2) Lisa's son is the lucky one who gets to regularly come to our food gatherings. Anthropology Club Award winner (1) Shakira is one of the two Anthropology Club Award recipients for this year. Anthropology Club Award winner (2) Sarah is one of the two Anthropology Club Award recipients for this year. Essex & Kent-Stephen Salem Award winner Nicole is the recipient of the third Essex & Kent/Stephen Salem Award. Drum roll - the winners! And our winners are Nicole (l), Shakira and Sarah. Dr Gay Frederick, Chair, made the presentations (second from left). So many bones... Aundrea and Robin are working on identifying faunal materials excavated during the summer at a site in Sechelt, directed by Dr Gary Coupland, UofT.
